Different types of curtains will result in different lengths of curtains.

Floor touching curtains, as the name suggests, means that the hem of the curtain touches the floor directly or is very close to the floor (usually no more than 1-2 inches).

The hem of semi-touchdown curtains is a certain height from the floor, usually between 1 - 3 inches.

The length of bay window curtains usually only covers the window itself, meaning that the hem of the curtain sits above or slightly below the windowsill.

How to Hem: Without Sewing

How do you shorten curtains without sewing the hems? The answer to this question is to use hem tape.

NON-SEWING METHOD

Follow the steps below to sew your curtains using a NON-SEWING METHOD:

We simply lay a piece of fabric flat so that there are no creases in the fabric.

  • Choose the style of hanging and measure out the width and height required. Some people like their curtains to touch the floor slightly for a more romantic feel, others like them to touch the floor, and still others like them to touch the floor slightly. I usually like my curtains to be in contact or touching the floor.

  • Determine the hem width Your non-sewing hem is complete. For the curtains in my studio for your reference. Floor length and pleated curtains should have a hem width of approximately 3 to 4 inches. (Shorter coffee curtains may be 2 inches.)

How to Hem Curtains-3

  • Create a double-folded hem. Place the curtains reverse side up on an ironing board, fold the bottom edge inwards 1 inch and use an iron to smooth the entire folded edge, making sure the width is consistent. Repeat this step, folding the edges another inch before ironing again. Remember, we want a two-inch hem, so iron it twice!

  • Finally, insert the wide iron-on crimp tape into the bi-fold crimp and adhere it with an iron of the appropriate temperature. Note: Polyester or muslin fabrics require special care, as high temperatures may cause the fabric to melt.

Your non-sewing hem is complete! This is the easiest way to get perfect pleats fast. Once you hang your curtains, trim the excess material and secure it, no sewing is required and the ruffles remain straight and even. I hope this simple tutorial helps you complete your curtain pleating project with ease!
